Gourds are a fruit that grow on a vine. They are a members of the Cucurbitaceae family, similar to a pumpkin or squash. Only, when dried they have a very durable hard wooden shell that lasts for thousands of years. Gourds have always fascinated me as an art form because they have been used for functional and non-functional objects across cultures and throughout history. The surface of gourds and interesting variety of the forms that develop as they grow make these natural canvas and sculptural forms a fun challenge. In the studio, I enjoy creating art objects with the natural beauty from nature that gourds provide. Please feel free to email me with questions about working with gourds. I would be happy to share my techniques and tips.
